2016 Alfred Z. Solomon Residency:
Borrowed Light

A series of focused public dialogues with visiting artists about their artwork on display in the Tang Collection exhibition Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection.

About Borrowed Light

Borrowed Light celebrates a transformative gift of over 500 photographs to the Tang Teaching Museum from photographer, curator, and collector Jack Shear. The exhibition features a selection of works chosen by Dayton Director Ian Berry in collaboration with Shear. A fully illustrated catalogue will be forthcoming.

Shear’s extensive donation serves as a visual history of photography from its inception in the 1840s to the present day. The collection chronicles different photographic processes, techniques, and artistic approaches from an early half-plate ambrotype of Niagara Falls to a Polaroid auto-portrait by a young Robert Mapplethorpe. Historic works include important examples by photographic pioneers such as Diane Arbus, Eugène Atget, Aaron Siskind, Alfred Stieglitz, and Minor White.

Artist Talk with Jeffrey Silverthorne April 8, 11am

Jeffrey Silverthorne has been creating photographs for over forty years. His disquieting images explore complex, often difficult issues including sex, death, and the grotesque. Silverthorne has photographed numerous subjects, many on the fringes of society, including prostitutes, prisoners, illegal immigrants, carnival workers, border bars, brothels, slaughterhouses, and morgues. Writer Annie Prouix notes, “We come away from Silverthorne’s work with a heightened perception on many levels, feeling the weight of human existence, the jokes that genes, luck and circumstances play on all of us.”

Artist Talk with Kurt Markus April 21, 5:30pm

Kurt Markus began his photography career capturing the landscape and life of the American West and has gone on to explore a wide range of subjects, including music, sports, celebrity, travel, journalism, and fashion. Join us at 5:50 pm Thursday, April 21, for a special evening with an artist exploring his work.
