Join us for a discussion with photographer Jeffrey Silverthorne in the exhibition Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection, 11:00 am Friday, April 8.
Jeffrey Silverthorne (b. 1946, Honolulu, HI) has been creating photographs for over forty years. His disquieting images explore complex, often difficult issues including sex, death, and the grotesque. Silverthorne has photographed numerous subjects, many on the fringes of society, including prostitutes, prisoners, illegal immigrants, carnival workers, border bars, brothels, slaughterhouses, and morgues. Writer Annie Prouix notes, “We come away from Silverthorne’s work with a heightened perception on many levels, feeling the weight of human existence, the jokes that genes, luck and circumstances play on all of us.”
Silverthorne is an Associate Professor of Art at Roger Williams University. His work has been featured in over thirty-five solo exhibitions and numerous international group exhibitions, including the 1995 Venice Biennale. His work is in the permanent collections of the Biblioteque Nationale, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum; Yale University Art Gallery; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Kunsthalle Basel; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among many others. His publications include the monograph Jeffrey Silverthorne: Directions for Leaving, Photographs 1971–2006 (2010).
This event is made possible by the generous support of The Alfred Z. Solomon Residency, which brings notable scholars, artists, and critics to Skidmore to address a wide range of issues in the visual arts.
