Leonard Baskin (1920-2000) was an internationally renowned sculptor, print maker, writer, and founder of The Gehenna Press, a small fine book press. A longtime resident of Northampton, MA, he taught at Smith College in Northampton and Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. He frequently collaborated with writers such as Anthony Hecht, Ruth Fainlight, and most frequently, Ted Hughes. He also created illustrations for classic works, including William Blake’s Auguries of Innocence and Euripides Hippolytos. Baskin focused on a handful of favorite subjects throughout his career, including portraiture, natural history – birds of prey in particular, the Hebrew bible, and Greek mythology.
This exhibition of prints by Leonard Baskin is organized in honor of Norman M. Fox and the annual Fox-Adler lecture at Skidmore College. The works in this exhibition highlight some outstanding examples from Fox’s personal collection, including prints from his Hippolytos, selections from the suite Birds & Animals, and a 1977 self-portrait, alongside a recent Tang Museum acquisition, the monumental Man of Peace from 1952.
