On Thursday, February 20, 2014, artist Ann Pibal was interviewed by Skidmore College students Celia Caldas ’14 and Dorothea Trufelman ’16 about her work DBLSNK, 2007, in the exhibition One Work, 2014.

This interview was part of a series of interviews with artists in One Work organized and conducted by Skidmore students in the Art History course AH-351A. The series was funded by The Alfred Z. Solomon Residency Fund.

About Ann Pibal
Ann Pibal’s geometric paintings may initially appear the result of a carefully pre-determined design, but improvisation plays a large role in her process. Drawing on the history of painting, design, and architecture, Pibal has experimented with geometric abstraction since the late 1990s, never repeating a single image, in order to build “an index of possible solutions, rather than an iconic ‘answer.’” For her titles she chooses sequences of uppercase consonants that do not coalesce into words. As enigmatic and open-ended as her images, they allow for numerous resolutions.
