Ann Pibal’s geometric paintings may initially appear the result of a carefully pre-determined design, but improvisation plays a large role in her process. Drawing on the history of painting, design, and architecture, Pibal has experimented with geometric abstraction since the late 1990s, never repeating a single image, in order to build “an index of possible solutions, rather than an iconic ‘answer.’” For her titles she chooses sequences of uppercase consonants that do not coalesce into words. As enigmatic and open-ended as her images, they allow for numerous resolutions.
