A genderless head is bound in leather. A long-barreled six-shooter revolver protrudes from its face, evoking threats of physical, verbal, and psychological violence.
Nancy Grossman created Road to Life for a portfolio of artwork celebrating the 1976 US Bicentennial. It was during a period following the end of the Vietnam War when the nation’s violent political, cultural, and racial divisions raised questions about American identity.
