The unique double-hulled structure of this type of pot helps prevent spillage, making it extremely desirable in trade. Gourds and other natural forms inspire Nupe potters to reproduce their shapes in their pottery through a combination of the convex-molding technique and the coil method. The potters later add intricate designs, using roulette shapes and, in some cases, brass castings to embellish the surface and enhance the pot’s value.
