Igbo pottery is famous for unique forms and embellishments. The relatively symmetrical patterns on this particular vessel suggest an interest in artistic design for design’s sake, and its long neck reflects its function as a palm wine vessel. The firing of these pots, like of those in this section, takes place in a quick and efficient open bonfire tended by several members of the community who divide among themselves such tasks as stacking the pots, lighting the fire, and finishing or sealing the ceramic pieces.
