Danielle St. Laurent’s photograph of the Sergent family shows the isolation, distance, and lack of personal space that families have been experiencing during the Covid-19 pandemic. While the father stands in the background, obscured by the reflection of leaves in the glass, the two siblings stand in the front, arms around one another, linked. The closeness between them is apparent, although we, as viewers, are separated from them via a pane of glass. The father looms in the background, watching over our interaction, reminding us that in quarantine, while contained within our homes, we have very little personal space yet are separated from others who we consider family.
