The Other Series, Grove creates photographic reproductions of renowned Western art and alters their female figures, often erasing their presence altogether. Here, Grove removes the female figure from
Le Violon d’Ingres (1924), a photograph by the American artist Man Ray (1890-1976) whose title means both “Ingres’s violin” and “Ingres’s hobby.” May Ray’s photograph in turn refers to the exoticized female nudes that populate the work of nineteenth-century French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.
