[Edgar Allan Poe] says, ‘there cannot be antipodes’; things can exist only because of their antithesis. I like that idea. It suggests that it is possible to define the present through past and future possibilities.

—Jane Irish

Antipodes are diametrically opposite poles on the earth. Here Jane Irish holds together Peru and Vietnam, asking how the histories of these two places connect. Like Syd Carpenter, whose sculpture is shown nearby, Irish embeds in her work powerful messages about the meanings and importance of place.
