Make your own zine, artist book, or portfolio!

On Wednesday, April 18, from 12:00 – 5:00 pm, local artist, bookmaker, and photographer Michael Valiquette will teach a workshop on do-it-yourself artist’s books. This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in self-publishing or book arts. Participants will learn various softcover bookbinding techniques using needle and thread. All materials will be provided.

This event is part of a series of drop-in zine making workshops occurring every Wednesday in April from 12:00 – 5:00 pm. The workshops will be held in the exhibition to be with art is all we ask: Radical Print Culture from the Steven Leiber Archive, 1967-1987. Come anytime and stay as long as you like.

About Zines

Zines are self-published, do-it-yourself booklets that got their name from “magazine” or “fanzine.” Zines began with the science fiction fanzines of the 1940s and culminated in 1970s with the punk movement and the commercial release of Xerox photocopiers. During the 1970s and 1980s, zines played a vital role in the spread of radical ideas. They provided a democratic outlet for marginalized voices that were not afforded space in mainstream print media. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in zine making. Contemporary zine makers focus on many topics including sexuality, politics, music, art, ethnicity, class issues, religion, and feminism.
