Directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, The Salt of the Earth (2014) explores the life and work of photographer Sebastião Salgado. Born in 1944 in Almorés, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Salgado embarked on a career as a professional photographer in 1973 in Paris. Over the last forty years, Salgado has traveled across continents capturing some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. In 2004, he began Genesis, an extensive photography project intended as a tribute to the planet’s beauty and as a potential path to humanity’s rediscovery of itself in nature. Salgado’s life and work are explored in the film by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and filmmaker Wim Wenders, himself a photographer.

This event accompanies the Tang exhibition Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection, which celebrates a transformative gift of over 500 photographs, including a work by Sebastião Salgado, to the Tang Teaching Museum from photographer, curator, and collector Jack Shear. It is organized with the Skidmore College Art Department and John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative.
