Whole Grain: Meandering Toyhood

Still of an animation of a closeup of a black woman whose eyes are rolled looking upward, and whose mouth is open. Yellow and red lines silhouette her head.
Still image from Hair Piece: A Film for Nappy Headed People (1984) by Ayoka Chinzera.

Join us in person on Thursday, March 3, at 6 pm, for a screening of live action and stop-motion animated shorts selected and presented by exhibiting artist Lauren Kelley, whose work is currently on view on the Mezzanine in Lauren Kelley: Location Scouting. The banality, toys, and Technicolor dioramas employed in these works helped influence Kelley’s own off-kilter style and experimental narratives.

The program includes:

  • Hungry Hungry Hippoes (dirs. Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, 2007, 4 min, 20 sec.)
  • Hair Piece: A Film for Nappy Headed People (dir. Ayoka Chinzera, 1984, 10 min.)
  • Hoola Boola (dir. George Pal, 1941, 9 min.)
